Kanatake walk, 2021-03-17

On this beautiful spring day 13 people gathered to report on birds, flowers, plants, insects etc. We started off with the first Barn Swallows, ツバメ of the year

Lots of young plants and flowers, as expected. Too bad I didn't have my regular working lense (28-300mm) as it was being repaired after my Aso adventure

Below the tiny flowers of Vicia tetrasperma

Covered in dew drops, Field horsetail

And then we found several Amana Lilies, アマナ (Amana edulis)
I had never seen them before

First raptor of the day: Eurasian sparrowhawk
Where is it going? It's the season to migrate now.

Chinese bayberry (ヤマモモ) male

A whole field in purple: Henbit deadnettle

Seven-spot ladybird (ナナホシテントウ)

The first frog of the year: Japanese tree frog

With all the different kinds of Violets Mr A. was busy sorting them out to get an id.
(Viola yedoensis)

The lucky finder of this 4-leaved clover presented it to me! I feel very special now

A nest for a wasp,

(Viola verecunda)

And another Viola spec. Was it Tachitsubosumire, タチツボスミレ (Viola grypoceras)?

In a dark part of the forest: Himesumire, (Viola inconspicua subsp. nagasakiensis)

Along the road: スミレ (Viola mandshurica) The most common Japanese wild Violet

A few buntings crossed our path, Yellow-throated bunting

A stick across a ditch turned into a bridge for ants

(Corydalis incisa)

(Symplocos kuroki)

East Asian Eurya (ヒサカキ) Eurya japonica

As usual there were a number of Shrikes, I think 7.
Bull-headed shrike (モズ)

Followed by the monthly sighting of an Eastern buzzard (ノスリ)

Butterflies were still few, but noteworthy was this Peacock Pansy,

In company of an Asian Comma

Our snail specialist managed again to find the smallest creature of the day. No name yet, but definitely a snail

White dead-nettle (オドリコソウ)

Again the purpleness of  Henbit deadnettle

Butterfly flower (シャガ) Japanese wild Iris

The gumy-like fruit of Spiny Oleaster (Elaeagnus pungens) and we all had one to taste

The 2nd frog! Japanese tree frog (ニホンアマガエル)

Grey heron (アオサギ)

Some more images of the Amana Lilies, アマナ (Amana edulis)

And last the Creeping Mazus, (Mazus miquelii)
