Others in the park

One morning I arrived early and headed for the 'komadori kaidan'. Something was there! I could see it, hear it. There were 2 or 3. Soon they appeared:

Red-billed Leiothrix, ソウシチョウ

A bit disappointing, but at the water basin they looked good

Other birds coming to drink or bath: Yellow-throated Bunting, ミヤマホオジロ

It gets busy here sometimes. Japanese Grosbeak, イカル  Pale Thrush, シロハラand Brown-eared  Bulbul, ヒヨドリ

Grey Bunting, クロジ
My bad luck with them hasn't changed. There are several around, I heard, but...

White-bellied Green Pigeon, アオバト

Brown-headed Thrush, アカハラ

Pale Thrush, シロハラ

Long-tailed Tit, エナガ

Ryukyu Minivet, リュウキュウサンショウクイ

Isahaya in February 3

Starting with a picture of the scenery on an early morning, showing the soft colors of winter and Harriers perched in the trees. There were 4 females and one male

 Hen Harriers, ハイイロチュウヒ  ♀ ♂

A Brown-eared Bulbul, ヒヨドリ eating berries with real natural frosting. Were they frozen? Was it tasty?

More female Hen Harriers, ハイイロチュウヒ ♀  during the day

Whooper Swans, オオハクチョウ disturbed by workers in the reeds

Eastern Buzzard, ノスリ on the tallest look-out

This last picture is of 6 Wild Pigs, イノシシ that we met at the end of both days. We counted 9 all together

Mandarin Ducks, オシドリand some more

There is a path behind the fence. It brings you right to the edge of the water and if you're lucky the Mandarin Ducks don't notice you. However, they fly off soon... There was a male with 2 females. The male looked spectacular!

Handsome guy!

A Ryukyu Minivet, リュウキュウサンショウクイ caught a green Grasshopper, mid-winter!
It's a Kubikirigisu, クビキリギス. They can overwinter as adults. And they can bite fiercely!

Brown-eared Bulbuls, ヒヨドリ feasting in a berry tree

About 200 Rooks, ミヤマガラス gathered in the trees and in the field at the end of the afternoon

Tankiri beans, タンキリマメ

Birds in the west

I love the winter colors when the sun is weak and the light is gentle. There aren't any spectacular birds, as far as I can see. But the common wings get that soft glare, making them kind of special.

Northern Lapwing, タゲリ

Eastern Buzzard, ノスリ

Common Goldeneye, ホオジロガモ
I want to see you on a sunny day!

Lots of Pale Thrushes, シロハラ - very few others. This generally drab-looking Thrush sometimes has a bit of color.

Or is this a hybrid?

Brown-eared Bulbuls, ヒヨドリ

That's why there are so many holes in the cabbage leaves in winter...

Aoji. Everywhere. Masked Bunting, アオジ

12th of April, an afternoon in the park

The 2nd week of April, after the rain. The bird matsuri prime time.

The afternoon started off with a Blue-and-white Flycatcher, オオルリ

At the same time: Asian Brown Flycatcher, コサメビタキ

several birds

And Ryukyu Minivet, リュウキュウサンショウクイ

Alpine Black Swallowtail, ミヤマカラスアゲハ

Around the bird bath: Narcissus Flycatcher, キビタキ appeared briefly. Feared of the many Bulbuls, maybe.

Not the best photos, but in time better ones will come, I hope.

Eastern Crowned Warbler, センダイムシクイ

And Pale Thrush, シロハラ

Many noisy and cheeky Brown-eared Bulbuls, ヒヨドリ scared off the tits and other small birds.
But this is maybe the only good photograph of the day 😆

A Male Pygmy Woodpecker コゲラ (See the red mark!) shooing off an intruder.

Peeking out of a hole in the tree. Is it a nest?
