While in Saga I stopped at Higashiyoka to see who was there. It was the "wrong" time of the month and there were no people carrying scopes or cameras. However, the 3 Avocets I came to see were there, say it at a fair distance. Among the shelducks and gulls. All the birds in that corner were black and white.

Winterscene: mostly Shelducks and Gulls.

Saunders's Gull,

In the park was a very friendly Red-breasted Flycatcher, ニシオジロビタキ - a female again...

Pretty girl!

Pied Avocet,

Finally, back on the road. Losing my purse with all sorts of cards and my driver's license had me grounded for some time. GRRRR. 😖 Now all has been dealt with or replaced (except for the money of course) so I can go out again. Back to MF

10 Years ago, it was such a novelty when an Avocet was seen. Birders from all over Kyushu gathered to watch the 1 or 2 birds. Now I wonder: who will come to the pond to see this one bird?

On a grey and cloudy day all looks monochrome

The Shovelers, ハシビロガモ have their special way of feeding.

All bums up and move around, let's go!

It's so funny, I can't stop watching them.

Saga 2

Continued from part 1. Other birds showing signs of summer

Between all the grey and white feathers were some pockets of reddish brown:

Bar-tailed Godwit,

Small plovers in the front line: Lesser Sand Plover,

The Curlews were mostly Eurasians,

There were many Spotted Redshanks, ツルシギ and a few already pitch black

Left over from the original 15 were 2 Pied Avocets,

Among the small Saunders's Gulls ズグロカモメ several black heads could be seen.

Below one with a flag; nr 68 it seems.

The Shelducks, ツクシガモ flying over will soon be heading north

12 Pied Avocets,

January 22nd: Every time I stop by there is one more bird in the flock. It is a very special year for them.

Without a scope it's too hard to come up with other waders than just the usual.
Common Greenshanks,

Again, with 2 Saunders's Gulls,
I took a lot of shots of these gulls feeding at low tide. At home the memory card became corrupt and I lost them all
  😭😭😭

The Spoonbills were active in the incoming tide.
41 Black-faced Spoonbills, クロツラヘラサギ and 15 Eurasian Spoonbills, ヘラサギ according to the man who counts

Pretty pink

And what's that behind the pink bill? A metal ring. How long has that been there? All the markings are flags or tapes nowadays. It might be old...

No colorful flowers in January, but some bird created its own

鹿児島県出水 part 6: At the pond, Lesser White-fronted Goose, カリガネ and many more

Continued from part 5

There were 7 geese hanging out between the pond and the seawall. Their heads would pop out above the weeds, so I could see there whereabouts but not much else. Just once they flew up and landed in the pond. Still too far for details, but I could make out 5 Taiga Bean Geese, オオヒシクイ; 1 Greater White-fronted Goose, マガン and 1 Lesser White-fronted Goose. First the scenery

Buff-bellied Pipit,

At the pond in the east: 2 of the Geese, the Lesser White-fronted Goose, カリガネ on the left

From the left: Lesser White-fronted Goose. カリガネ;  Greater White-fronted Goose, マガン and Taiga Bean Geese, オオヒシクイ;

The smallest, the cutest: Lesser White-fronted Goose.

Other birds in the pond included Black-faced Spoonbill, クロツラヘラサギ and Eurasian Spoonbill, ヘラサギ

Several Common Shelducks,

And one single Pied Avocet,

Nostalgia; remembering my home country. Barnacle Geese in The Netherlands

Greylag Geese

Domestic Geese

Watchdog geese 😆
