Finding relieve from the heat

The soaring temperatures send me to the mountains, where the breeze keeps me cool and the birds are active. On my way up (before 6am!) I saw 7 Japanese Thrushes scurrying on the ground, hopping from stone to stone, scratching through leaf-litter to find insects and earthworms. I had never seen so many in one day - one hour! before. I can't wait to go back

In a field with many yellow Sawa Oguruma, サワオグルマ flowers this Alpine Black Swallowtail, ミヤマカラスアゲハ looked electric blue

Kanatake update

A few days after the "Walk" I drove by the park after work and heard the cuckoo calling nearby. Getting out of the car it disappeared right away. A brief glimpse was all I got. I went in pursuit but instead found the flycatcher. His song echoed over the lawn. Interesting! He clearly mimicked a partridge! I wanted to see him, but he stayed hidden most of the time. However, perseverance wins! When I got ready to go home a real partridge stepped out of the bush.

It was past 4 pm and I was kind of hurrying back to the car before it got too cold. 5 Birds crossed my path and were too close for good pictures. And all too soon they disappeared in the dense bush again.

This introduced species is quite common around Fukuoka, but more often heard then seen.
