鹿児島県出水 part 7: Daurian Jackdaw, コクマルガラス

 Last part of the Izumi series

There were hundreds of Rooks in the area, often sitting on the wires. I looked for the smaller birds among them, but without success. In the field they were easier to locate. Mostly between the cranes' feet. Of the 20+ Jackdaws the majority was dark grey/black. I saw just 2 birds with silvery white body parts.

But none of them have those bright blue eyes as their brothers in The Netherlands

Last raptor: Eastern Buzzard, ノスリ with some Carrion Crows, ハシボソガラス (Corvus corone - has nothing to do with corona - I hope😌)

Not many birds. Winter visitors have long left. Migrators moved on. Summer birds stay mostly in the mountains, where it's cool. I wish I could do that.

We walked most of the general course. Only a few members attended because of the Corona regulations.

2 Gossamer buterflies on 1 plant, I thought it might be a pair. But looking well it seems they could be 2 different butterflies, left Short-tailed Blue, ツバメシジミ. Right might actually be Holly Blue, ルリシジミ

The ditches were full with little fish

Pairing damselflies: Aomon Tombo, アオモンイトトンボ

Afterwards I hung around a little longer and found a young crow that could not fly yet. The very vocal parents were giving instructions from above, but the wings would not flap

In the big trees at a shrine nearby: ニホンヤモリ, Japanese Gecko

The place was crawling with hairy caterpillars. All very big and fluffy. Several stones had coccoons on the edges. I want to see the moth next!

Oogori no storks

Wanting to see the Oriental Storks in Oogori I went there 4 times. The first 3 - in vain. I waited a while and studied the sleeping Spoonbills (how many Eurasian, how many Black-faced?)

I observed the Black-winged Stilt, セイタカシギ that was always there among the common ducks.

And I entertained myself with the one Mandarin Duck, オシドリ...

...who seemed quite happy among the Eastern Spot-billed Ducks, カルガモ

A raptor flew over occasionally, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, ハイタカ

There was one Oriental Crow with white feathers, ハシボソがラス
