Lake Edzuko, Kumamoto

Starting the new year watching the first sunrise is an old tradition in Japan. Of course this should be done on January 1st, but we postponed ours a bit. On January 4th we got up at 3 am to drive south and see the sun rise over Edzuko Lake in Kumamoto. The water of the lake starts "steaming" when cold, moist air drifts over the slightly warmer surface. Sunshine adds the golden glow.
