Imazu WBSJ meeting Oct. 5th

The weather was good for a field day. Not hot, not cold, not too windy either and not too sunny. Good for us and for birds. When I arrived at the meeting point some people were keenly looking up at the first autumn visitor:

アリスイ Eurasian Wryneck

At the double ponds a few ducks other than the regular residents hung out at the back
Northern Shoveler,

Between the Mallards, マガモ 2 Northern Pintails, オナガガモ discernible by their black bills

2 Juvenile Whiskered Terns, クロハラアジサシ flew in and out of view

Not the usual White Wagtails, but 2 Japanese Wagtails resting on the fence
Japanese Wagtail,

Singing its beautiful tune briefly, a male Blue Rock Thrush,

In the river a few more winter guests had arrived. Eurasian Wigeon, ヒドリガモ and Eurasian Teal, コガモ in eclipse

Greater Scaups, male and female,

A large number (I mean 7 or 8) of Bull-headed Shrikes, モズ  were yelling back and forth

1 Intermediate Egret, チュウサギ about to leave soon.

The pleasant weather made it seem like early summer, added by these honeybees carrying pollen on their legs. Apis mellifera

The rice is harvested. 30 or 40 Black-Kites, トビ were watching the progress in anticipation

Looking forward to the hoppers to become exposed and easy to grab

Taking a chance, flying low, close to the farmer on his combiner

Darting down to catch that morsel before anyone else spots it

Got it!

The life of a Black Kite in Kyushu

Persicaria japonica

(Sphenoclea zeylanica)
is a common and edible weed of rice paddies in other tropical countries, I saw or noticed it rather for the first time

Mentha canadensis
(Mentha pulegium)

Thank you for your support, Mr T!
