米 kome = rice

Rice is Japan's most important crop and has been cultivated across the country for over 2000 years. It is the primary staple food of the Japanese diet and of such fundamental importance to the Japanese culture that it was once used as currency, and the word for cooked rice (ご飯gohan) has become synonymous with the general meaning of "meal".

A rice planting event, where city-people wanting some of that country life feeling for them selves or their families can get involved.

In most of these events the rice is planted in a pattern which shows after 2-3 weeks and usually depicts some kind of slogan.

This group returned to 'their' field to help with the harvest.

Kids love to help as they get to play in the rice straw.

Japanese rice is very tasty and unlike that of most other origins it's good to eat with just a bit of seaweed or pickles at the side, At home on s/y Alishan we too eat rice regularly. However, not 3 times a day, like most of our neighbors.

With Jaap to Mt Kuju where we did a mini hike in the autumn forest. A little climbing, not too much, it felt good to be able to do this again.
