Upland Buzzard, オオノスリ

First time for me to see this bird in Imazu. It is a biggg bird, spectacular! The young bird's white colors stand out against the blue sky and the dark green forest. It was an exciting experience for many birders.

The first day I couldn't do any better then this.

The next day I had better luck

A few days later, again

A bit blurry, but the sunlight in the tail feathers make this special

January in the mountains 3, Chinese Bamboo Partridge, コジュケイ

It was past 4 pm and I was kind of hurrying back to the car before it got too cold. 5 Birds crossed my path and were too close for good pictures. And all too soon they disappeared in the dense bush again.

This introduced species is quite common around Fukuoka, but more often heard then seen.

January in the mountains 2, male Red-flanked Bluetail, ルリビタキ ♂

The first weeks of winter were very quiet. Not many Bluetails showed up and if I saw any it were females. I wanted to see blue! Sure, one day mid January suddenly 4  came out and greeted me. The one below seemed very curious and became a perfect model.

January in the mountains, 1

South of the city, north of Saga prefecture is the mountain range where I go to see these. Not so high, but quiet, except for some helicopter (Wow!!!)

Grey-bellied Bullfinch, ウソ

Elegant or Yellow-throated Bunting, ミヤマホウジロ

Long-tailed Rosefinch, ベニマシコ

female

5 birds in the bush, far! across the river. Can you see them?

Festival of Waxwings part 2, the Bohemian

The Bohemian Waxwing, キレンジャク is a bit different. Not only the color of its tail feathers. It acts alone, always a bit removed from the flock. Socially unconventional.

The festival of Waxwings

When the berries of the Mistletoe, ヤドリギ are ripe the birds come storming in, going wild on the sweetness and shitty of the gooy substance. There were about 10, but more are expected. It's a real party!
